ABC Darwin drew on the exceptional work of Professor David Nutt in the UK, who has mapped the harm impacts of assorted drugs. Those drugs (both legal and illegal) rated drug impact on two levels of harm – ‘harm to self’, and ‘harm to others’. The single most harmful drug was alcohol. In Australia we now know that a significant amount of hospital admissions are alcohol related, and the long term impacts are extensive. Should Australia just put up with it or do we need a more comprehensive understanding of the widespread, non age specific harm that alcohol can cause?
